March is National Women’s History Month, which means it is the perfect month to gather together a few good friends for a Girl Friends Getaway Special at our Lenox MA inn.

Sit by the roaring fire, enjoy a glass of wine and tasty cheese, and talk about old times. Then get out there and create some new memories together. We’ll give you coupons for some of the shops at the nearby Prime outlet stores, just two miles away. We will also happily arrange a luxurious spa day for you all.

Celebrate the women of history with a concert at The Mount

Are you up for a bit of spontaneity?

Edith Wharton’s Estate The Mount is presenting a special performance of Edith Wharton’s Parisian Salons, featuring the Cantilena Chamber Choir, on March 13, 2010, at 4pm. The Cantilena Chamber Choir is the leading a cappella choir in the Berkshires; they will sing French music that was performed in one of Wharton’s Parisian Salons, such as Sept Chansons by Francis Poulenc, the Trois Chansons by Maurice Ravel.

Many of Wharton’s Salons were fundraisers for the Belgium War Relief Effort in World War I. She worked tirelessly for the relief effort, and for this she was recognized by the French and Belgian governments. The concert in the drawing room of The Mount is a fitting event during Women’s History Month.

The concert begins at 4pm on March 13, and is followed by a reception. Space is limited, so advance tickets are strongly recommended. Call (413) 551-5111.

We hope to see you and your girlfriends this weekend at our bed and breakfast Lenox.

The days have been warming the earth and the flowers are starting to show their appreciation. The grounds of the Applegate Inn are a great place to witness the arrival of spring. We have some Berkshire b&b specials this time of year to help welcome the fine, if somewhat unpredictable, spring weather. While here, the Berkshire Botanical Garden is a great place to spend an afternoon. It is hosting a special day camp for children during the week of April 20 – 24 (spring break in this area); your whole family can find interesting things to do during the day, then come together in our parlor each evening to share your stories.

The Mount, Edith Wharton’s estate in Lenox, makes a pleasant day trip from our Berkshires lodging. The restored estate and lovely gardens open for the season in May, but there are a few special events this April for those who cannot wait. Edith Wharton and her husband Teddy had the house built in 1902, and the design was strongly influenced by Wharton’s 1897 book, The Decoration of Houses. Although the couple spent most of their time abroad, The Mount remains an important monument to an influential American author.

The Mount is the self-designed estate & gardens of Pulitzer-prize winning Edith Wharton, author of “The Age of Innocence”, “The House of Mirth”, as well as many other novels and non-fiction books on the subject of Architecture, design, decoration and travel.

Her home is a work of art, worthy of the seven-minute drive from our Bed and Breakfast Lenox. The house is currently closed, and will re-open on the first of May. The house recently went through a struggle to stay open; their primary bank was about to foreclose on them. However, there was overwhelming support to keep the beautiful turn-of-the-century home open, and the folks over at The Mount managed to raise 1.3 million dollars!

The home will be opening for an event in March as part of the Berkshires Festival of Women in the Arts. Author Julie Wosk will be presenting a lecture entitled “Alluring Androids, Robot Women and Electronic Eves: Artificial Women through the Ages”. Sounds fascinating! Held on March 28 in the drawing room of the estate, it should be a intriguing lecture in one of the most interesting historical homes in the Berkshires.

We hope you can join us this spring Lenox Bed and Breakfast for some art & culture!
