We get quite a few avid hikers at our Berkshires bed and breakfast. Given our proximity to the Berkshires, that is no surprise. We encourage all you trail walkers to check out our Hiker’s Special. After a healthy breakfast at Applegate Inn, we will give you a trail map, water bottles and snacks, and point you in the direction of the Pleasant Valley Mass. Audubon Wildlife Preserve. We’ll even pay for your entrance to the preserve. Please mention this special when you make your reservation.

We love spring at our Berkshire b&b. The flowers are in bloom, the days are warm and the nights are cool. Nearby trails throughout the Berkshires are sparsely populated, making it a good time to explore them. The Pleasant Valley Sanctuary is quite near our bed and breakfast Lenox; it is one of the best spots in the Berkshires to catch site of a beaver or for bird watching. The 1.6 mile trail is not too strenuous, but very rewarding. When you return to the inn, have a dip in our heated pool and relax.

Looking for a little outdoor excursion during your stay in the Berkshires? Why not head to Lenox and the Pleasant Valley Sanctuary, only eight miles from our Bed and Breakfast Lenox. There are very easy trails as well as more challenging treks where one can reach an old fire tower at the top of the peak. A beautiful view, of course, is the reward for your efforts to get to the top! In a couple months the sanctuary will be full of song birds coming home for the spring. You will also find a variety of water fowl, including egrets, herons and others in the little ponds that one passes on the trails.

Another unique aspect of Pleasant Valley is the beaver population. They were introduced to this area and one can see the many dams and nests they have built along the water’s edge. They are nocturnal animals, so a sighting is a rare treat, but there are benches and boardwalks built into the paths to allow for rests or patient viewing.

A Beaver & dam.
Along with beaver homes in Yokun Brook, there is also a large salamander migration here every spring along West Mountain Road. Trails lead through forests, meadows and wetlands along the slopes of Lenox Mountain. The sanctuary includes over 1300 acres. We hope you might enjoy a little Berkshires nature while visiting our Bed and Breakfast Massachusetts!
